Melbourne Airport (MEL) can also be referred to as Tullamarine Airport. Melbourne Airport is the second busiest airport in Australia for international flights and the busiest for local domestic flights. The airport is located 20km northwest of the centre of Melbourne. The airport can be accessed from Melbourne city via by car,  taxi’s and the public transport Skybus service.

Melbourne Airport Terminals

Terminal 1 Information

Qantas domestic services are located in Terminal 1. Departures are located on the first floor and arrivals are located on the ground floor. The domestic services include Qantas, Jetstar (Budget airline owned by the Qantas group) and QantasLink.

Terminal 2 Information

International airlines are located in terminal 2. There are a total of 16 gates. The airlines servicing this terminal include Air China, Air Mauritius, Air New Zealand, Air Pacific, Air Vanuatu, Cathay Pacific, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Emirates Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, Korean Air, Malaysia Airlines, OzJet, Philippine Airlines, Qantas (also includes Jetstar for Interntional Flights), Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, United Airlines, Vietnam Airlines and Virgin Blue (Pacific Blue International Flights).

Terminal 3 Information

Most non Qantas domestic services are located in Terminal 3 – the only except at the moment being Tiger Airways Australia. Domestic airlines that use this terminal include Virgin Blue, Skywest and Regional Express (REX).

Terminal 4 Information

Terminal 4 is considered the “Budget Terminal” which has reduced facilities; Tiger Airways is the main user of this terminal. This terminal is the first budget terminal located within an international airport in Australia.

Access Melbourne Airport by Car & Taxi

Melbourne Airport is located 25km away from Melbourne’s Central Business District (CBD), it is accessed via CityLink which is a toll motorway and the Tullamarine freeway. It is possible to avoid the CityLink toll motorway but it is not recommended if travaling to Melbourne Airport to and from Melbournes CBD, however this would involve use of back streets and residential roads. Purchasing a DayPass (24 Hour Pass) or a Weekend pass is the best option, this can be purchased in advance or upto three days after before a fine is issued. Telephone CityLink on 13 26 29. (24 hours a day, 7 days a week).

Taxi's operate throughout Melbourne and also available at the airport.

Melbourne City to Melbourne Airport


Depart on Elizabeth Street.


Turn left onto Pelham Street.


Turn left onto Flemington Road/Flemington Road.


Continue straight ahead onto Mt. Alexander Road.


Turn right onto Tullamarine Freeway On Ramp.


Continue straight ahead onto Tullamarine Freeway/CityLink.


Exit to the left onto Tullamarine Freeway On Ramp.


Continue straight ahead onto Tullamarine Freeway.


Exit to the left onto Melrose Drive Off Ramp.


At the roundabout, take the second exit onto Melrose Drive.


Turn left onto Sharps Road.


At the roundabout, take the second exit onto South Centre Road.


At the roundabout, take the first exit onto South Centre Road.


At the roundabout, take the first exit onto Operations Road.

The Skybus service is the only public transport available to the airport from Melbourne’s CBD, the SkyBus service departs from Southern Cross Station (formerly Spenser Street) and takes approximately 20mins. SkyBus is not part of the standard zone 1 or 2 metcard public transport ticket system, a special ticket must be purchased either in advance or on the day. The SkyBus leaves for Melbourne Airport every 15 minutes between 6:00 am and 9:30 pm and half hourly or hourly at other times.

There are two standard public transport buses that service the airport, "Route 478
Moonee Ponds - Melbourne Airport via Essendon > Airport West > Niddrie
" and "Route 500 Broadmeadows - Victoria University via Gladstone Park > Tullamarine > Sunbury".

There are a number of bus services operating from country Victoria outside of greater Melbourne. These services are; Bendigo-Melbourne Airport Shuttle Bus which runs an hourly bus from Bendigo, Castlemaine, Kyneton, Woodend, Gisborne and Sunbury; Airport Direct Shuttle Bus from Shepparton, Nagambie and Seymour which operates twice a day;

Melbourne Airport Car Parking

Melbourne Airport has a wide range of car parking options. The Express Car Parking amd the Short Term car parking are exactly the same pricing, the express car parking is only meters from Terminal 3 and 4 and the short term parking is only a short 3 to 4 minute walk to all Terminals.

Long Term Car Parking is located 400 metres away from the terminals, with a free shuttle bus running between the car park and the terminal 24 hours a day every 20 mins. No Bookings are required.

Multi Level Long Term Car Parking is located 200 meters away from Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 via undercover walkways. To access the multi level long term parking, enter Short Term Car Parking and take the ticket, then proceed up the spiral drive to Level 3 to the Mutli Level Long Termi Car Parking, reenter your ticket then collect and proceed into the car park.
